about

In the summer of 2006, an unlikely assemblage of Baltimore and Washington, DC punks convened in a garage in northeast Baltimore. Amid empty beer bottles, cigarette smoke, stale, humid air, and a leaky Harley Davidson in the corner, The Reticents were formed. Joey Nayls had played for years in New York bands Under the Gun and Roger Miret and the Disasters and had come back home looking to start something new. Dru the Kid turned up and quickly established himself as a young but able drummer with something to prove. PJ had just hung up his guitar after 10 long years of sweating in DC with The Goons. He was ready to pick up the microphone and step up front. DC's veteran hardcore punk bass player Jon Shaffer eventually joined the band, rounding out the sound with his 4-string fury.

Four years later, the band are ready for a fresh start with their EP "The Sun Rises in the East" on Basement Records. A fitting title, really. The band has a renewed sense of energy, and while their previous efforts have not gone unnoticed, they feel more focused and determined than ever. Their new Basement EP picks up right where their first release, "EP I/ EP II" on Zodiac Records left off. The songs may be a little bit shorter and a little bit faster, but it's still the same true and honest early 80's hardcore punk sound with just the right amount of east coast and west coast influence, reminiscent of bands like Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Bad Religion, and Black Flag. In fact, Mike McColgan of the Street Dogs once described the band as a "cross between Sick of It All and the Circle Jerks." More succinctly, Razorcake Magazine may have put it best: "…if you like your punk raw and in your face, this band is for you."
